The Garden of Gethsemene

At the western base of the Mount of Olives, within the walled perimeter of the Church of all Nations, can be found a small grove of ancient olive trees. The historic Garden of Gethsemene is centrally placed in the hearts of all Christians as the site where Jesus prayed the night before his arrest (Mark 14:32-50). Local tradition and lore date these living monuments back to Biblical times. It is more likely though that the gnarly and twisted specimens are descendants of the orignal ones. One thing is indisputable, they are indeed very old. The garden itself is well maintained. In addtion to the olive trees, there is a beautiful albeit contemporary selection of bougainvillea. Here it is mentioned that, following the betrayal of Christ, Judas hung himself from the branches of an olive tree.
